This is a cross-phase programme which has been designed with two aims in mind:
- to achieve clarity around and understanding of Outstanding and to move all teachers to being consistently Outstanding;
- to provide skills and thinking so that participants can develop their coaching skills to get Outstanding for their colleagues as well.
The programme has been developed around an experiential learning model for the purpose of firmly embedding participants’ learning. The first part of the day is given over to challenging and deepening participants’ models of key practices such as questioning and differentiation. This is followed by the opportunity of going into classrooms, observing practice, deconstructing what’s been seen using the OTP tools and understanding the structure of successful classroom teaching and learning. And there is always the chance to benchmark personal practice against what’s been observed and to ask the question What’s the difference that’s making the difference?
The programme is delivered over seven once-a-week meetings and focuses on: challenge and engagement, questioning, assessment, differentiation and coaching (two days). The final day is given over to participant presentations which exemplify the use of the OTP tools. There are two in-school practice days when facilitators observe participants in their schools and offer non-judgemental, learning focused feedback to help on the journey towards becoming solidly and consistently Outstanding.
The experiential nature of the programme encourages participants to try things out, ask the question What if I were to …? and all with the benefit of peer and facilitator feedback and coaching. The seven days are about finding out about what works in participants’ existing practice, figuring out how they can do more of it and thinking differently to get even better outcomes.

Ron Piper, formerly Assistant Principal at The Ridgeway School and now PGCE Course Leader for the Swindon SCITT. Ron holds ICF recognised coaching qualifications and is also an NLP Master Practitioner and Trainer. Ron's current training focuses on exploring the commonalities that exist between outstanding teaching, coaching and self-leadership and considers questions such as Do Outstanding teachers coach rather than teach? What’s similar about coaching and leadership thinking? and What has to happen to create a coaching culture for staff and students? Ron is especially interested in how planning and designing lessons around coaching presuppositions has positive impact on student outcomes. In short, Ron is keen to help teachers to be coaches in their classrooms and help them to understand that Outstanding is a way of thinking rather than doing.
