UpcomingDeveloping Literacy in the Mainstream Classroom

Event Phone: 01793 818603

This 3 day programme will give Secondary Teachers of subjects other than maths and English a multitude of ideas to support the teaching of literacy across the curriculum, improving outcomes for all learners, but specifically low-literacy attainers and EAL students.

The programme aims to provide professional support to front line classroom teachers so that they can enable EAL pupils and pupils with poor literacy skills to reach their potential.

It is designed to build:

  • Teachers’ competence and awareness of language development
  • Teachers’ awareness of the language demands of their own subjects
  • Teachers’ understanding of the specific characteristics of their EAL learners
  • Teachers’ confidence
  • To change practice

Day 2: 26th February 2018, 9.00 – 3.30

Day 3: 18th May 2018, 9.00 – 3.30

Workshop Leader

  • Ron Piper
Ron Piper, formerly Assistant Principal at The Ridgeway School and now PGCE Course Leader for the Swindon SCITT. Ron holds ICF recognised coaching qualifications and is also an NLP Master Practitioner and Trainer. Ron's current training focuses on exploring the commonalities that exist between outstanding teaching, coaching and self-leadership and considers questions such as Do Outstanding teachers coach rather than teach? What’s similar about coaching and leadership thinking? and What has to happen to create a coaching culture for staff and students? Ron is especially interested in how planning and designing lessons around coaching presuppositions has positive impact on student outcomes. In short, Ron is keen to help teachers to be coaches in their classrooms and help them to understand that Outstanding is a way of thinking rather than doing.
  • Sarah Jerman
Sarah Jerman has been leading the two Teaching Schools in Swindon for 3 years and works with approximately 100 Primary, Secondary and Special schools in the Swindon locality. This work focusses heavily on recruiting and training new teachers, facilitating training programmes for all members of the teaching community and working with schools wanting support. Prior to her current role, Sarah was the Vice Principal at Drove Primary School and EYFS leader. Sarah has taught in all year groups from under 2s to year 13, but her passion lies in Early Years education. She is an EYFS Moderator for the Local Authority and facilitates the LA Statutory profile training. Sarah is a trained facilitator on the Outstanding Teacher Programme and specialised in Coaching and Mentoring during her MEd degree. Along with Ron Piper, Sarah is trained to facilitate training for teachers of EAL students, with Swindon Teaching School recently becoming an EAL Regional Training Centre.
